ABSTRACT

Since the mid-nineteenth century, a current of opinion about Las Hurdes had been taking shape, with increasing intensity, which, while denouncing the
serious problems of various kinds existing there, demanded, together with the action of the public powers, the intervention of the King to deal with them and
promote measures to solve them or, at least, palliate them. Two successive initiatives of undoubted importance were directly related to that opinion. In the first place, the appointment of a Scientific Commission made up of three doctors who toured Las Hurdes in April 1922 and concluded that the two main causes of the dire state of health and social conditions they found there were malaria and chronic hunger, while recommending some remedies to deal with this situation. And, secondly, the trip in June of that same year of Alfonso XIII, then in a delicate situation as a result of the action in the Morocco protectorate and the disaster of Annual, in order to know personally the existing problems in Las Hurdes and act accordingly. The royal trip, which was the object of praise and criticism, had some undoubtedly estimable results, encouraged above all by the Real Patronato de Las Hurdes that was constituted, as a consequence of it, in July 1922.
